<image:title>About - MAKAYLA PETERSON</image:title>
<image:caption>Makayla Peterson is a dancer, choreographer, teaching artist, and dance scholar from Brooklyn, NY. Her identity is influenced greatly by her Trinidadian background on both sides of her family. She is a 2020 graduate of Temple University where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and a Minor in Digital Media Technologies. She founded Monét Movement Productions The Collective (MMPTC) in May 2020 and since then, her works have been featured in multiple festivals and showcases. As an artist, it is important for her to create works that provide a space for the fusion of traditional and non-traditional dance forms. With MMPTC, Makayla hopes to create a space for artists to connect, share the unique voice of herself, her dancers, the communities she belongs to/represents, and become a pillar within the dance community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Repertory - 868 IRVING STREET: PAINT AT DAWN ·POWDAH AT DAWN· (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>This work tells the story of J'ouvert, a celebration that originated in Trinidad and Tobago, from the perspective of its peoples and those of Trinbagonian descent. Covering ourselves in paint and powder, dancing to a live riddim section, and being flagwoman, we are sharing the quintessential aspects of what makes J’ouvert what it is. Utilizing both African and Caribbean diasporic movements, we are sharing this cultural celebration in its purest form through movement. This dance proliferates the Trinbagonian and Caribbean culture throughout the world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘Queen of D Band’ tells the story of my first introduction to Carnival by way of my grandmother, Janet. This improvisational choreopoem is rooted in “playing ah”, where mas becomes a way to honor her through the ancestral practice of mockery. As I move, I am “playing” her “playing ah” mas, playing in her footsteps, moving as she once would and connecting to her through history, time, and space.</image:caption>

<image:title>Repertory - RIDDIM & BASS (2023)</image:title>
<image:caption>“Riddim & Bass” explores, showcases and hgihlights Trinidad and Tobago’s riddim section- a musical landscape comprised of a group of percussion instruments that (typically) accompanies a steel pan. By themselves, the pulse and rhythmic drive evoke feelings of festivity with clangs of iron and metal- an abrasive symphony of energy. The sounds of the dudups drums seems to wake our ancestral roots. We represent the riddim section instrument and display how the riddim and bass lives in our bodies, the inextricable link between dance and music, and how it shapes our movement!</image:caption>

<image:caption>In “The Alchemist”, one witnesses the internal battle and struggle to heal from unspoken and unseen scars. Through the use of alchemy, an unhealthy purging is transformed into a journey of finding the antidote. The antidote requires you to move away from things that no longer serve you. It is a process of making something out of nothing. As an alchemist, I am continuously creating this new path for myself as it is a constant process of evolution.</image:caption>

<image:title>Repertory - HOMECOMING. (2024)</image:title>
<image:caption>Homecoming is ‘ah tabanca’ in its purest form. The home we are referring to in this work is all spaces where the spirit and energy of the Caribbean and of Caribbean peoples exists. For us, home is both a place and a feeling. The unfiltered expression of jubilation and happiness felt at Carnival celebrations, the ritualistic movements of J’ouvert as we cover our bodies in paint and powder to the clangs of a percussive melody that carries us through the streets; when you are free from ‘de tabanca’, you have returned to one self and you are home. Trinbagonians and by extension Caribbean people seek continued happiness and joy despite what life hands them, now isn’t that a beautiful way to live?</image:caption>

<image:title>Repertory - REBIRTH (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>“Rebirth” is inspired by the quote “Be you, love you. All ways, always”, by Alexandra Elle. What does that mean? How do you love yourself unconditionally? We interpret these words to mean that we are and always will be enough, but it starts with you loving yourself. The work exemplifies a transformational journey of self-reflection, discovery, realization, and love to understand that you are not defined by society and external conditions. ‘Rebirth’ reflects on the overall perception of what is beautiful. One realizes that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“868 Irving Street” is Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago, from sunrise to sundown. We wake to J’ouvert, driven by riddim sections and melodies of bass. <image:title>Repertory - REBIRTH (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>“Rebirth” is an extended and evolved version of the original work created in 2019. This piece embodies the journey of self-reflection in opposition to beauty standards held in society. It is reflective of my interpretation of a quote by Alexandra Elle “Be you. Love you. Always. All ways,” which I interpret to mean that we are and always will be enough, but it starts with you loving you. By shedding the layers of societal and external conditions one realizes that beauty is truly subjective.</image:caption>

<image:title>REPERTORY (Copy) - 868 IRVING STREET (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>‘868 Irving Street’ is Carnival in Trinidad, from sunrise to sundown. We wake to J’ouvert, driven by riddim sections and melodies of bass. The interlude basks in the love and unity ingrained in Caribbean culture. We close with a beautiful embracing of our culture through costume and movement.</image:caption>

<image:title>REPERTORY (Copy) - REBIRTH (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>'Rebirth' is inspired by the quote “Be you, love you. All ways, always”, by Alexandra Elle. What does that mean? How do you love yourself unconditionally? I interpret these words to mean that we are and always will be enough, but it starts with you loving yourself. The work exemplifies a transformational journey of self-reflection, discovery, realization and love to understand you are not defined by society and external conditions. ‘Rebirth’ reflects on the overall perception of what is beautiful. One realizes that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.</image:caption>

<image:title>REPERTORY (Copy) - THE ALCHEMIST (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>In ‘The Alchemist’ one witnesses the internal battle and struggle to heal from unspoken and unseen scars.

<image:title>REPERTORY (Copy) - 868 IRVING STREET: PAINT AT DAWN ·POWDAH AT DAWN (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>This work tells the story of J'ouvert, a celebration that originated in Trinidad and Tobago, from the perspective of its peoples and those of Trinbagonian descent. With authentic cultural elements such as paint and powder, riddim section, and the flagwoman, we are sharing the quintessential aspects of what makes J’ouvert what it is. Utilizing both African and Caribbean diasporic movements, we are sharing this cultural celebration in its purest form through movement. This dance works to continue to proliferate the Trinbagonian and Caribbean culture throughout the world.</image:caption>
